Off Bloadway
I swear half the budget at my last hagwon was set aside for the annual play. They had the most amazing costumes and each child had a microphone a la Britney Spears, it was quite the spectacle. The school even hired out a theatre for the night.
The craziest thing by far though was the loooong time put in to train these little tykes into learning lines, songs and dances. The Korean teachers spent weeks and weeks preparing the kids for the performance and gosh darn it, they didn't dumb down the coreography for anyone!
I remember doing school performances back in the day, but we never had to learn rigorous dance moves or soliloquies boot camp-style like these Korean children do.
The kiddies were great and the performance was pretty impressive, but I don't know if all that money and time was worth the kids' stress. Korean students work so hard; they never seem to catch a break from the age of 3 (kindergarten) to 18 or 19 when they finish high school. As cute as they looked, I would never want to put my children through that.
